FORMER surfing champion Layne Beachley became Mrs Kirk Pengilly at the weekend in a private ceremony held at the INXS star's South Coast property.
Following a seven-year courtship, the couple let superstition dictate their wedding date and chose the 10th day of the 10th month of the 10th year for their nuptials, a popular and lucky date that won't return for another century.
Taking the 10-10-10 theme to the extreme, they were married at 10 minutes past 10am on Sunday surrounded only by a small party of some 18 guests, including Pengilly's model daughter from a previous relationship, April Rose .
Beachley, a first-time bride, is understood to have worn white on her big day, not that the couple were releasing details yesterday. They have sold their wedding to a magazine in a lucrative deal.
It is Pengilly's second marriage. He married singer Deni Hines in 1993. That union lasted 10 months.
After telling this column she would marry in a rainforest, it was in sleepy Kangaroo Valley that Beachley pledged her love to the singer, saxophonist and guitarist.
New step-daughter April-Rose yesterday confirmed the wedding via Twitter: "Back in Sydney. Where was I all weekend, you ask? Why, I was merely at the secret wedding of my father and Layne! CRAZY."
The couple are planning to hold a bigger celebration in Sydney later this week.
