It’s becoming a habit with Eagle Rock Entertainment: this time is a special collector’s edition of INXS ‘Mystify’ to make me want to go back in time. And really, time travelling is the only way I will ever see this live, thanks to humanity biggest disgrace (no, not talking about drugs, talking about dysfunctional relationships) who prematurely took Michael Hutchence away from this world.
It’s easy to forget how amazing a band was when they decide to find a new singer through a reality show, which instantly turns them into uncool has-beens trying to stay afloat. Truth is, the union of the Farriss brothers with one of the few real rockstars ever born (and the sexiest thing ever exported from Oz) produced some classics that no one is likely to emulate.
The delivery is intense, vivid, feline, with a Michael Hutchence making love to his microphone and extending to the whole crowd of the German Rockpalast Festival. It was INXS at their highest in 1997, just five months before a cruel twist of fate deprived music fans and family of this magnificent frontman to leave them with Bob Geldof instead.
The interaction with the audience goes beyond the limits of the word itself when Hutchence takes a couple of drags off a spliff and passes it to the front row: a profane communion act defining an uncommon bond with what looks like the only trusted true lover he ever had. ‘Searching’, following the smoke, is a unforgettable soul number where the musicians in the band can display an often overlooked talent. And when ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ comes up, the emotions just jump stark naked out of Hutchence’s eyes, while the question ‘Is that true?’ posed to his fans leaves us with goose bumps, thinking how little did we all know about what would happen not long after this show.
When watching an artist with such a level of stage presence, you can’t help yourself from loudly expressing your surprise; that’s when normally someone comes up saying ‘oh yeah, but they have coaches and all sorts, it’s the money, the major label, the whole circus…’. Once more Eagle Rock comes to the rescue, with a bonus feature from the same Festival, only 1984 edition: while you have to remember what year we’re talking about and forgive high waist jeans and a truly unfashionable haircut, Michael already has ‘The Devil Inside’, no doubt. And I may not be one to burn churches or kill goats in the Norwegian woods, but in this case, I think the dark side may have the best of me.
Score: 9/10

Ok. Well the packaging is great. There's a great little booklet which gives a summary to INXS history at Rockpalast over the years and concludes that the release is in honour and tribute to Michael. I can't imagine a release direct from INXS themselves would be better produced.
The tracklisting is as per the numerous bootlegs versions that have done the rounds since, but the picture quality and sound are both excellent and as per a tv broadcast as if it were today. To see and hear without the degredation of having something that is a copy of a copy of a copy, of a copy of a VHS upgrade to DVD is refreshing. All it lacks is HD picture.
Hearing the sound quality as it was intended makes the tracks come to life even more. All in all this is a MUST HAVE for any Hutch era INXS fans worldwide.
As for the 6 bonus tracks from the 1984 Rockpalast show, these may have come out on a DVD only a few months ago http://www.amazon.com/Live-Germany-1984-Inxs/dp/B002VKE0WG/ref=pd_sim_m_4, but on this latest DVD the picture and sound quality are (annoyingly) far, far superior. I am more than a little disappointed with what I got in my 1984 show DVD. If only Eagle Rock could've been responsible for that release too :-(
