Hi, I'm new here & was wondering if anyone knows if there will be a memorial service in Sydney this year. I was in Australia 10 years ago and was lucky enough to attend & meet some of Michaels lovely family & friends & was thinking of going again this year if there was one & if fans were still allowed to go. I'm from the UK so whether there is one will effect my travel plans to come over.
I did have a tel number of someone who used to be involved in organising them but unfortunately it was on my australian sim card & I've lost it.
Any help would be great, thanks in advance!

i just skimmed through the article again and it does mention that the career spanning box will be released at the tail of 2012, so i'm assuming it's not the 10 album remasters box. wish there was some way we could get a confirmation about the box. shortly after michael passed there were around 80 unreleased tracks in the vault.

From Music Week magazine 3/5/11

The next two years will see an explosion in activity around the INXS catalogue, after Universal Strategic Marketing agreed a deal for the band’s 10 studio albums with Michael Hutchence.

The major’s Mercury label previously had the rights to three of the band’s albums but this will be the first time in Europe that the rights to the 10 key catalogue albums – including the 6m-selling Kick – are held by one company.

The first fruits of the deal – which is for the world excluding the Americas – will be the re-release of the 10 studio albums physically and digitally on May 30.

Universal Strategic Marketing vice president Andrew Daw, who led Universal’s highly successful campaign for the re-release of The Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main Street, said the band’s reputation as one of the key stadium rock acts of the Eighties had declined over the years, with little activity on their catalogue and many albums not even available.

“It is the first chance we have had to work the catalogue digitally and physically,” said Daw. “We feel like their back catalogue has stalled for a long period of time. It is important to re-introduce people to them – they and U2 and Guns ’N Roses were the big stadium bands of the Eighties, they haven’t gone on and held that position.”

“It is quite a phenomenal catalogue – they have had 30m album sales, 23 UK hits, 17 hits in the US, with seven of them top 10, and 33 hits in Australia,” he added.

Key to the campaign will be a live date the band are playing this summer at the Southern Sounds festival in London. The band, who decided to continue after the death of Hutchence in 1997, will headline the event, which concentrates on music from the Southern Hemisphere. Daw explained it is an opportunity for them to play before European promoters and journalists.

This, however, will just be the start of two years of INXS activity: Universal is currently working on a new best of for release for September/October, as well as a TV documentary of the band that will include previously unaired footage from a 1997 Brussels gig.

2012 will then see the re-release of Kick to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the album’s original release, with Universal prepping multiple formats – from iTunes LP to super deluxe – complete with unreleased material. The year will end with the release of a “career boxed set”. “They have never had a proper INXS boxed set before,” said Daw. “We feel that is something missing in their catalogue.”

Daw said the deal – which came about after Chris Murphy took over the band’s management again – was a “really good deal financially” explaining that he believed the catalogue would sell consistently.

“I think the catalogue will prove to be rock solid, if you can remind people about the band and hit their nostalgic sweet spots. There are a lot of people who would put Kick as a guilty pleasure,” he said.

The 10 albums covered by the deal start with the band’s 1980 debut INXS, running through to 1997’s Elegantly Wasted, their last album with Hutchence. The deal also includes “other bits and pieces”, according to Daw, including live material.

So many people are turning on the five remaining original members for not having JD front them anymore. I saw them 3 times with JD and the one very strong feeling I got each time was that Michael may as well have never existed! JD never said his name once on stage nor did the band, and Chris Murphy stated this himself (JD only ever briefly talked about Hutch in the press). When I saw INXS on Dec 3 in Fremantle with Ciaran out front it felt like Michael was finally there again; Ciaran talked about Michael several times and really gave him respect and praise and Andrew dedicated NTUA to Michael's memory. It was the best INXS show I had seen since 94 when I last saw them with Michael; the guys were so happy on stage and the chemistry between the five original guys and Ciaran was amazing, it was a much happier six guys on stage than it was with JD. Also I felt even though JD has a great voice that INXS lost vocal power on stage because he couldn't reach a lot of the higher notes, with Ciaran the power was back, especially on songs like Bitter Tears and the second half of Beautiful Girl, so all in all I'm happy that my favourite band are happy and that this incarnation doesn't shy away from Michael like the JD one did, I'm not going to attack them and put no fault on JD's part like other fans, because I have no idea how hard he was to work with and I do remember he caused friction in the band with a few of his comments to the media just after he joined, he obviously wasn't right for them; they are happier with Ciaran and the song writing is flowing, and on stage the chemistry is really fun and positive, thousands around the world are loving the new shows, their getting some of the best reviews they've had in years and the power is back so Yee Hah I say, stop being so harsh and long live INXS!!!

Mine was at the start of the 1993 Get Out of The House tour in Perth where they opened with Communication and they also did All Around and the Wembley version of I Send a Message, but I was really blown away when they did Barbarian with Michael saying it was the first song they wrote after arriving in Perth in 1977, they also did Just Keep Walking (both were the heavier more dynamic versions later known as the Capri 92 versions) Also during those 3 nights they did several new songs off the unfinished FMDH album, from memory Days of Rust, The Gift, Please, Time, Make Your Peace, Cut Your Roses Down and as Michael introduced them Full Moon Over Dirty Hearts and Don't Blame it on The Messenger, a year later in Mandurah not far from Perth they did every song off the now released FMDH album except Kill The Pain, in 94 they also did the sparse version of NTUA with just Andrew Michael and Kirk they later did on Jools Holland, I feel very lucky to have seen those rare songs live with Michael front and centre.
So what were your rare songs and what tour etc?

I fell in love with INXS in 1987 as a 12 year old boy, and I remember the loss I felt when Michael Hutchence died and for years it's been really hard living in should have/could have land; you know 'if Michael had of lived INXS would have done this or where would they be today with him and what brilliant music we'd have. But I have finally accepted the reality that none of those things will ever happen because he is gone and has been for 14 years; and now I can just enjoy the 20 years of brilliant music he left us with INXS and enjoy it for what it was and will always be, because living in should have/could have land is an unhappy place to live. There is no doubt that INXS have never been the same since he died but how could they be? They have had to try their best to move on and be something new, and I personally believe the best thing they could have done was the Original Sin album because it finally drew a line in the sand between the Hutch years and being able to go in a completely new direction and create a new era of INXS that Tiny Summer and their new front man Ciaran Gribbin have signalled the start of. The Hutch era can never be bettered or equaled and even though I Get Up, Sugar and the Switch songs were good it all sounded like them trying to be the same band they used to be, and now finally they are moving on from that and I'm happy because they're not the same band; but they are still brilliant musicians and Andrew is still a fantastic songwriter and Ciaran is a very talented musician/songwriter in his own right and has a fantastic voice. I love Tiny Summer personally and I find it being so different from the Hutch era a good thing because it's a lot easier to seperate the old INXS with the new now; everything before Original Sin I would imagine Michael's voice singing because the songs sounded to close to the past and it made them harder to enjoy. My favorite INXS era will always be the original and it's always there for me to enjoy, but I love Original Sin and Tiny Summer and I'm happy that with all the uninspired production line music of today we still have INXS. I know some fans don't like Tiny Summer and wanted something that sounded like classic INXS, I personally don't want to hear the Kick X or any of the Hutch era rehashed because we already have that and it shouldn't be redone or continued because it belongs to Michael and who INXS was during those 20 years; it's time for them to start a whole new era which they're finally now doing and I commend them for it. I've stopped comparing this INXS to the original and now I can finally relax and enjoy both.

This is my opinion only and I hope some fans click with some things I say. I have loved INXS since 1987 and I to have mourned the loss of Michael. I wanted Jon Stevens to front them and was happy when he did; I also thought JD was a great fit, and then with all the is he/ isn't he confusion I recently said I was done with the band and would stick to the Hutch era. This has changed recently because I finally understood the Original Sin album and what the guys have been trying to do for 14 years. First of all INXS was always six guys and not a back up band for Michael (he drove this fact home a lot during the 20 years) so for me they deserved to continue, but of course to do so meant without Michael. I thought Jon and then JD were right to front them, I got so frustrated thinking the guys had blown their chance with both of them; now I understand that as great as they are they are not right for INXS. The 2 Jon songs and the Switch songs are good songs but for the most part they don't challenge and they sound to close to the Hutch era songs; Original Sin has been the first project to really challenge fans and critics and now Tiny Summer has taken it further. So many fans and critics slam the band for not doing songs that sound like their biggest hits which these people define as their sound; it should be sensual, funky etc, but that was only ever half of what they did and the brilliance of their musicianship. Michael was a powerful singer with his own unique voice, Jon and JD in certain ways sounded quite similar in their delivery, it wasn't until Original Sin where we got to hear completely different voices with the band and a fresh new musical approach; Rob Thomas said they needed to do Original Sin to be able to truly move on and now I get it. To truly move on they need a singer that sounds completely different to Michael, but who has a fantastic voice and a power to it like Michael had and with new music that has real substance and depth to it and that is really fresh and challenges; strong songs, strong musicianship and strong vocals because that is what they always represented so why settle for less? That era can't be bettered but they can make a new era that stands strong on it's own. I haven't been this excited for INXS in 14 years because I feel they have found their right guy, and they didn't look for him it just happened organically as it did in 1977 because as Andrew said "magic was again in the room" and I can hear that magic on Tiny Summer; it just took them 14 years to find it. I think the song is so beautiful and I feel fortunate to get it and what they're doing; I think the new singer has a fantastic voice and a real depth and quality, tinges of Bono, Chris Martin and Ian McCulloch but is also unique and offers something really different and solid. Only a singer with these qualities should stand where Michael once stood and for all these reasons is why I personally think Tiny Summer honours Michael's memory and their own legacy. So I say give Tiny Summer and the new line up when it's announced a chance and long live INXS. Remember it's my opinion not gospel. Cheers

I've followed INXS since I was 12 in 1987 and I appreciate every song; but it is getting really old seeing that all over the world for years now on every talent show the only INXS song covered is Never Tear Us Apart. I love that song and I enjoy playing it on my guitar sometimes, but you'd think that was their only hit. There are so many other great songs, other hits and even songs that the casual fan have never heard that delivered in the right way could get a great response. The INXS I love isn't just the Kick album, it's every album from INXS 1980 to Elegantly Wasted, shine a brighter light on this phenomenal band and stop killing this great song. What are your thoughts?
