Thank you, yes I meant nov. That would be good if there was something going on while I'm in Sydney.
Rhett was so lovely when I met him, he came over to chat & even ended up giving me a lift back to Sydney after the service then met him later on in the evening for drinks.
Unfortunately Kel was unable to make that service as he was unwell & it was that year, just a few weeks later that he sadly died.

Yeah Jack Jones' name came up as he sang on Gary Garry Beers solo project 'Mudhead' so people thought he could be a possible singer for INXS since he had a few hit songs in Australia in the early 90's with his band Southern Sons.

Hey - do you mean a memorial service in November? Or do you mean a gathering for his birthday today?

There used to be gatherings held in November which Michael's dad Kell helped organise and attend, but since he died and with Rhett now living in Bali the gatherings haven't happened for a few years in Sydney. There was one on the 10th anniversary of his death in 2007 which had a small tribute concert.

Nothing is planned for his birthday today...but we will try and organise something this year in Novemeber as this year will see some new MH projects released so would be good to organise something so fans can get together and remember MH and talk about the new projects.

Hi, I'm new here & was wondering if anyone knows if there will be a memorial service in Sydney this year. I was in Australia 10 years ago and was lucky enough to attend & meet some of Michaels lovely family & friends & was thinking of going again this year if there was one & if fans were still allowed to go. I'm from the UK so whether there is one will effect my travel plans to come over.
I did have a tel number of someone who used to be involved in organising them but unfortunately it was on my australian sim card & I've lost it.
Any help would be great, thanks in advance!

The bands publicist at the time just said that after MH's death so people knew INXS might be continuing on and that they still have material to release. As Shawn said there is a few Elegantly Wasted era songs that have not been released. But most of the other stuff has been used...I know what is "in the vault" as I worked for INXS up until 2005...and we used the songs on Kick, X, WTWYA re-issues etc around 2002...if there was all these other great unreleased songs the band would have released more than 1 new studio album in the past 15 years. But as I said there is some unreleased INXS songs with MH but def not 80. And half the members in INXS don't feel comfortable releasing unreleased material as they have said in interviews, as they feel that if it wasn't good enough the first time to include.

Thanks for making clear Matt.
I guess the 80 unreleased tracks news made it all around the world.
I read about it on a Chilean newspaper in 1997, after MH died.
Must have the clipping somewhere.

yeah, that stuff appears to be on the back burner now. btw, here's the quote i was referring to regarding unreleased content...of course this is from december 1997:

a source close to the group confirmed that there are stacks of unreleased material that could eventually be released.

"It's just shitloads," said Shawn Deacon, the band's Australian publicist, of the unreleased output. "Through the years they put so much stuff down that didn't make it onto records.

"I was talking to their production manager and he said there were four really, really great songs that didn't make it on to [the band's most recent album] Elegantly Wasted that were stronger than several of the ones that did make it on that record." Deacon estimated that there were upward of 80 tunes in the band's vaults that never have been released.

I would say that they have delayed that as they are trying to promote themselves with Ciaran at present. This article is from when they were still performing with JD. And hardly anyone bought the box set or very best of cd last year as most people have the albums/songs already.

The band are planning a 25th anniversary tour of 'Kick' so they will no doubt re-release 'Kick' yet again for like the 6th or 7th time time in countries outside USA. As there was already tour edition in 88, Japanese expanded cd in 1989, Kick US remastered in 2002, Kick Deluxe 2cd in 2004, Kick Remastered 2011, Kick on vinyl 2011...like it would be strange if someone was an INXS fan and didn't already own Kick.

There isn't 80 unreleased songs in the vault, most of the unreleased material has been released apart from some Elegantly Wasted period songs.

i just skimmed through the article again and it does mention that the career spanning box will be released at the tail of 2012, so i'm assuming it's not the 10 album remasters box. wish there was some way we could get a confirmation about the box. shortly after michael passed there were around 80 unreleased tracks in the vault.

From Music Week magazine 3/5/11

The next two years will see an explosion in activity around the INXS catalogue, after Universal Strategic Marketing agreed a deal for the band’s 10 studio albums with Michael Hutchence.

The major’s Mercury label previously had the rights to three of the band’s albums but this will be the first time in Europe that the rights to the 10 key catalogue albums – including the 6m-selling Kick – are held by one company.

The first fruits of the deal – which is for the world excluding the Americas – will be the re-release of the 10 studio albums physically and digitally on May 30.

Universal Strategic Marketing vice president Andrew Daw, who led Universal’s highly successful campaign for the re-release of The Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main Street, said the band’s reputation as one of the key stadium rock acts of the Eighties had declined over the years, with little activity on their catalogue and many albums not even available.

“It is the first chance we have had to work the catalogue digitally and physically,” said Daw. “We feel like their back catalogue has stalled for a long period of time. It is important to re-introduce people to them – they and U2 and Guns ’N Roses were the big stadium bands of the Eighties, they haven’t gone on and held that position.”

“It is quite a phenomenal catalogue – they have had 30m album sales, 23 UK hits, 17 hits in the US, with seven of them top 10, and 33 hits in Australia,” he added.

Key to the campaign will be a live date the band are playing this summer at the Southern Sounds festival in London. The band, who decided to continue after the death of Hutchence in 1997, will headline the event, which concentrates on music from the Southern Hemisphere. Daw explained it is an opportunity for them to play before European promoters and journalists.

This, however, will just be the start of two years of INXS activity: Universal is currently working on a new best of for release for September/October, as well as a TV documentary of the band that will include previously unaired footage from a 1997 Brussels gig.

2012 will then see the re-release of Kick to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the album’s original release, with Universal prepping multiple formats – from iTunes LP to super deluxe – complete with unreleased material. The year will end with the release of a “career boxed set”. “They have never had a proper INXS boxed set before,” said Daw. “We feel that is something missing in their catalogue.”

Daw said the deal – which came about after Chris Murphy took over the band’s management again – was a “really good deal financially” explaining that he believed the catalogue would sell consistently.

“I think the catalogue will prove to be rock solid, if you can remind people about the band and hit their nostalgic sweet spots. There are a lot of people who would put Kick as a guilty pleasure,” he said.

The 10 albums covered by the deal start with the band’s 1980 debut INXS, running through to 1997’s Elegantly Wasted, their last album with Hutchence. The deal also includes “other bits and pieces”, according to Daw, including live material.

I think it is a LOT to place blame on one person for something to not work out. Especially when you don't really know what went on behind the scenes. Kind of like a marriage.

As much as JD never mentioned Michael on stage, neither did any of the other guys. You only really saw him mentioned on the anniversary of his death and they knew him, JD never did.

At the same time, mentioning Michael at every opportunity gets tedious and predictable, I don't see it to be that necessary actually.

The way Chris Murphy put it, I think Ciaran is actually contractually obligated to mention Michael.

Chris is in control of the band now, so what he says goes.

If he thinks it's the best decision, then it's the best decision.

I love Michael and I always will. And I'll love the era of INXS with Michael.

Everything else just seems like mistake after mistake. I don't care to listen or see them anymore but I don't think JD should be blamed for everything.

I completely agree. JD just didn't seem to want anything at all about Michael mentioned or honored. Yet he totally impersonated many of Michael's performances which truly showed why he was an Elvis and celebrity impersonator before the TV competition show.
He did
Yes, with JD is as if Michael never existed or perhaps that is what JD wished.
He casued a lot of friction with the band I think because he was only in it for himself. When he thought it would serve him in a good way he would mention Michael to the press and media. Otherwise, as you said when JD was around you would get the feeling Michael may as well have never existed.
Ciaran in his short time with the band has shown more respectand praise then all the time JD was with the band.
