Dogs In Space – 8:00pm
Unscreened in Los Angeles for ages, Richard Lowenstein's seminal Australian post-punk masterpiece Dogs In Space comes to the Cinefamily in a brand-new HD restoration! Based on Lowenstein's own whirlwind experiences as a young man in the heart of the late '70s Melbourne scene, the film is a dense, chaotic stew of vignettes charting the endless 24/7 partying that takes place in a trashy communal house — a magical realm in which its wild, impoverished inhabitants do dope, go to shows, play shows, smash TVs, occasionally go to school, and generally live out a gloriously hedonistic life path. In the center of this storm is Sam (played by INXS frontman Michael Hutchence), the charismatic heroin addict whose Zen-like calm fares him well amongst a kingdom's worth of other jokers, junkies and misfits. With a killer soundtrack (featuring Aussie local heroes amongst the likes Iggy Pop and Gang of Four), warm 'n fuzzy period rock show recreations and a fluid, audacious visual style, Dogs In Space is not only an authentic gem begging for rediscovery — but is also a helluva good time. Part Time Punks main man DJ Michael Stock will be spinning records before and after the films!
Dir. Richard Lowenstein, 1986, Blu-Ray, 104 min.

We're Livin' On Dog Food – 10:00pm
The original rallying cry of punk rock truly was a shot heard 'round the world, as evidenced by its deeply planted roots in even Australian soil! From its auspicious late '70s beginnings, Melbourne's underground post-punk subculture overflowed with talent, ferocity and a willingness to go boldly where no Aussie had gone before — and We're Livin' On Dog Food, originally intended as just a small Dogs In Space "making-of" doc, is the definitive collection of interviews and vintage footage from this vibrant and unpredictable scene. Rowland S. Howard (of The Birthday Party), the Primitive Calculators, Ollie Olsen, Phillip Brophy and many others proffer their recollections and air their animosities in a tribute to the real-life realm of yesteryear that inspired the world of Dogs In Space. The legendary venue The Crystal Ballroom, Nick Cave's pre-Birthday Party band The Boys Next Door, the drugs, the fashions, the influences and the philosophies of the times are all on proud display alongside never-before-seen interviews with Michael Hutchence from the Dogs In Space set. Vive le "Little Bands"!
Dir. Richard Lowenstein, 2009, Blu-Ray, 94 min.

‘Dogs in Space’ metal movie badge from 1986/87!

Friday, May 21st, 2010

disbadge.jpg

To promote 'Dogs in Space' a number of different merchandise items were sold at the cinemas and record stores in 1986/87.  T-shirts were sold, but some of the rarer items included metal badges, beltbuckles, posters and cards.

Long before Banksy stencil style graffiti, 'Dogs in Space' stencils were used to paint 'Dogs in Space' logo's all around Sydney and Melbourne.  I still remember growing up in Melbourne seeing the logos on walls all around Camberwell and Richmond!

Some punk bands had used this form of advertising in the late 70's / early 80's, or advertising on footpaths as seen in the movie with Dogs in Space painted on the street outside the house.

A crazy publicity stunt at the time was by radio station 2JJJ asking owners of VWs to call the station for a double pass, $20 and a Dogs in Space stencil for their car!  Everyone in Dogs in Space seemed to drive a VW!

Dogs in Space DVD-release t-shirts are still on sale from Umbrella Entertainment, slightly different and the colar not as punk looking as the original 1980's t-shirts but still cool…

A very rare 'Rooms For The Memory' Test Pressing has being added to the Discography section of the website!  Pressed by WEA Australia this test pressing is dated 12/12/86.  Ofcourse this song went on to become Michael Hutchence's first top 10 solo hit single!

Did you know?  If you look very carefully at your old Rooms For The Memory singles at the run out groove on the vinyl, and then hold it up to the light you will see etched on it "Do Dogs Fly".

Keep checking the Discography section for more updates!  Coming soon a seperate discography section looking at highlights of Michael's work with INXS.

Dogs in Space House in 2010

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

For fans of the movie 'Dogs in Space' starring Michael Hutchence.  Here is what the house from the movie looks like today.

Situated in Berry St in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond, this house is the actual house where Richard Lowenstein and Sam Sejavka lived in the late 70's, which was then rented and modified from the owners so that Dogs in Space could be filmed in the same exact house.

Also included in the gallery is a record shop in Melbourne called 'Record Collectors Corner' which currently has a big Dogs in Space poster in the window.  Ollie Olsen actually used to work in that record shop!  Although it used to be in a different location, but was a favourite shop of mine back in the 80's.

If you could write a script for a Dogs in Space 2 what would your plot be?  Would be interested to read fans suggestions on the forum!

Don't forget Dogs in Space is now available in Australia on Blu-Ray!

Dogs in Space Blu-Ray Edition – March 10th, 2010

Monday, February 15th, 2010

dis-rolling-stone-blu-ray-march-2010-news.jpg

Set against the backdrop of Melbourne’s late ‘70s punk rock scene, Dogs in Space chronicles life in a chaotic, squalid share-house. Hippies, addicts, students and radicals fill their days and nights with sex, drugs, parties and television.

Writer/director Richard Lowenstein balances a series of chaotic vignettes with the central story of the romance between housemates Sam (Michael Hutchence), the lead singer of the band, Dogs in Space and his lover Anna (Saskia Post) as it spirals out of control.

Hutchence is a brilliant symbol of reckless youth in this, his first dramatic screen role, giving Dogs in Space instant cult status upon its release.
