Missing Song Titles from Listen Like Thieves – ‘DLT’ and ‘Tell Me’

« | »

Leading up to the release of 'Listen Like Thieves' in 1985 there was a lot of indecision on the final tracks to make the album.  Manager Chris Murphy was convinced 'This Time' would be the single to take INXS to the next level in USA, whereas legendary producer Chris Thomas was convinced it wasn't a hit.

Chris Thomas told the band they needed one more song, and the band found a tape of 'What You Need' which was then added at the last minute to the final album!  Luckily the band listened to Chris Thomas as 'This Time' only made it to #81 on the USA charts, whereas 'What You Need' went top 5 which cracked INXS in the States.

Here is an early Test Pressing of Listen Like Thieves given to me by Perry Cooper (Former Vice President Of Atlantic Records).  As you can see the tracklisting is totally different to the final version!  With 2 titles 'DLT' and 'Tell Me' not included on the final album, instead replaced by 'Same Direction' and 'Three Sisters'.  'Kiss The Dirt' is also just titled 'Falling Down The Mountain'.

  1. Great post. I've been waiting patiently for the remastered versions of Shabooh Shoobah, the Swing and Listen Like Thieves. It seems that they all have offcuts and out-takes like they had on the Kick, X and WTWYA remasters. Have you ever heard any rumours about the possibility of this?
Of all their albums these are the ones that would really benefit from remastering.
    Cheers

Yes it is possible these 3 albums can be remastered as Universal Music own the rights to these albums in Australia.  And Atlantic/Rhino own the rights in the USA.  Especially in Australia, these albums are when INXS were at their most popular around The Swing and Listen Like Thieves era's.  Personally it's my favourite INXS era the mid 80's…

    Great post Matt!

Any remastered albums from INXS is a very good thing.

Can you imagine not having 'What You Need?' That could have changed the course of the lives of the bandmembers and Richard Lowenstein. The video made it an even bigger hit than it otherwise would have been. I agree about this 'This Time' though. I always thought the lyrics were too simple.

  6. Dave says:

Great post that Matt, would love to hear these tracks one day :-)

  7. Jane Alpert says:

Anything with Michael remastered is a very good thing. No Michael item should be "out of print."  Everything should be made pristine and available!

  8. Matt says:

Even soundtrack songs like 'Do Wot You Do' (Pretty in Pink), 'Laying Down The Law' (The Lost Boys), 'Good Times' (The Lost Boys) and 'Different World' (Crocodile Dundee) are all in the Listen Like Thieves era and could be remastered.  With The Swing & Shabooh Shoobah there is all the Dekadance remixes too.

  9. Stephen says:

I'd prefer to hear the unreleased songs than the remixes. Some remixes were cool, but if I had the choice I'd love to hear the songs that were deemed not good enough to make the final cut. There's bound to be some gems in there.
Who's going to start a facebook petition then?
