Missing Song Titles from Listen Like Thieves – ‘DLT’ and ‘Tell Me’

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Leading up to the release of 'Listen Like Thieves' in 1985 there was a lot of indecision on the final tracks to make the album.  Manager Chris Murphy was convinced 'This Time' would be the single to take INXS to the next level in USA, whereas legendary producer Chris Thomas was convinced it wasn't a hit.

Chris Thomas told the band they needed one more song, and the band found a tape of 'What You Need' which was then added at the last minute to the final album!  Luckily the band listened to Chris Thomas as 'This Time' only made it to #81 on the USA charts, whereas 'What You Need' went top 5 which cracked INXS in the States.

Here is an early Test Pressing of Listen Like Thieves given to me by Perry Cooper (Former Vice President Of Atlantic Records).  As you can see the tracklisting is totally different to the final version!  With 2 titles 'DLT' and 'Tell Me' not included on the final album, instead replaced by 'Same Direction' and 'Three Sisters'.  'Kiss The Dirt' is also just titled 'Falling Down The Mountain'.

‘Dogs in Space’ metal movie badge from 1986/87!

disbadge.jpg

To promote 'Dogs in Space' a number of different merchandise items were sold at the cinemas and record stores in 1986/87.  T-shirts were sold, but some of the rarer items included metal badges, beltbuckles, posters and cards.

Long before Banksy stencil style graffiti, 'Dogs in Space' stencils were used to paint 'Dogs in Space' logo's all around Sydney and Melbourne.  I still remember growing up in Melbourne seeing the logos on walls all around Camberwell and Richmond!

Some punk bands had used this form of advertising in the late 70's / early 80's, or advertising on footpaths as seen in the movie with Dogs in Space painted on the street outside the house.

A crazy publicity stunt at the time was by radio station 2JJJ asking owners of VWs to call the station for a double pass, $20 and a Dogs in Space stencil for their car!  Everyone in Dogs in Space seemed to drive a VW!

Dogs in Space DVD-release t-shirts are still on sale from Umbrella Entertainment, slightly different and the colar not as punk looking as the original 1980's t-shirts but still cool…

Rare Footage! Michael Recording Red Hill

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

ayersrock.jpg

In 1994, Michael Hutchence recorded 'Red Hill' for a tribute album to Japanese duo Chage & Aska titled 'One Voice: The Songs Of Chage & Aska'.  Michael re-interpreted the lyrics into English.

The album however wasn't released until 1996 without much promotion outside of Japan, so many Michael Hutchence fans may not be familiar with this track.  The song showcases Michael's singing voice in one of his stand out solo recordings!

Here is very rare footage of Michael recording the song.  This is the only footage of Michael singing 'Red Hill' that exists!

Michael Hutchence & Jenny Morris Duet ‘Jackson’

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Michael Hutchence & Jenny Morris performed 'Jackson' at the 1984 Countdown Video & Music Awards (held in 1985) at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

Jackson was recorded by Michael Hutchence along with Jenny Morris, Michele Bennett and Nick Conroy (Castles of Spain)

"Because Jenny and I…we used to listen to it all the time and went down to the studio and recorded it – really sloppily I might add.  Just sort of one take stuff.  Just had a lot of fun and then suddenly we dragged it out onto Dekadance and it went onto the country charts" Michael said.

Jenny Morris: "My first experience with INXS and certainly wasn't to be my last.  Each of the guys took control of a song on the 'Dekadance' project and this was Michael's choice".

Dekadance was a remix cassette of tracks from The Swing Album.  It stayed in the top 10 album chart in Australia for about 3 months which was amazing for a cassette-only album at the time.

In 2006 Jenny Morris released 'Clear Blue In Story Skies' where she recorded a cover of the INXS song 'This Time' as a tribute to her friend Michael Hutchence.

Watch Michael & Jenny perform the song on the Countdown Awards.  That year INXS won 7 awards for 'The Swing' Album, including Michael Hutchence winning Best Male Singer!
