Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Rhino takes it back to the totally '80s with the release of the HOT TUB TIME MACHINE: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK.

The film’s soundtrack presents a sonic snapshot of the mid-’80s, featuring the epic power ballad “Home Sweet Home” from Mötley Crüe’s third album, the quadruple platinum Theatre of Pain. Along with glam-metal, the soundtrack’s selections survey the era’s various styles, including alternative rock from The Replacements (“I Will Dare”), New Order (“Bizarre Love Triangle”), and Echo And The Bunnymen (“Bring On The Dancing Horses”); early rap by Salt ’N Pepa (“Push It”); and new wave by Men Without Hats (“The Safety Dance”) and Scritti Politti (“Perfect Way”). The set also includes a newly recorded version of Public Enemy’s “Louder Than A Bomb,” which was originally released on their classic 1988 album It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back.

In addition to classic ’80s tracks by David Bowie, INXS, Talking Heads, The English Beat, and Spandau Ballet, HOT TUB TIME MACHINE: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK also features two songs by actor Craig Robinson, who delivers unforgettable covers of Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl” and The Black Eyed Peas’ “Let’s Get It Started,” which are both featured in the film as well.

Hot Tub Time Machine is a madcap time-travel comedy starring John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, Crispin Glover, Lizzy Caplan, and Chevy Chase. The film follows a group of best friends who’ve become bored with their adult lives: Adam (John Cusack) has been dumped by his girlfriend; Lou (Rob Corddry) is a party guy who can’t find the party; Nick’s (Craig Robinson) wife controls his every move; and video game-obsessed Jacob (Clark Duke) won’t leave his basement. After a crazy night of drinking in a ski resort hot tub, the men wake up, heads pounding, in the year 1986. This is their chance to kick some past and change their futures—one will find a new love life, one will learn to stand up for himself with the ladies, one will find his mojo, and one will make sure he still exists.

Soundtrack released today (March 23rd, 2010) in Nth America on Rhino!  Available to purchase from the Rhino store…

Beck friends to cover the whole classic 1987 kick album

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

The fourth release from Beck’s Record Club will see it cover the classic 1987 INXS 'Kick' album in full, the album which turned Michael Hutchence into one of the biggest rock stars on the planet! Beck’s Record Club is an informal meeting of musical mates who get together and record an album in a day. At his official Record Club site, Beck proudly proclaims that “nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time.

There is no intention to ‘add to’ the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens.” So far he has enlisted Feist, Devendra Banhart, MGMT, Nigel Godrich, Giovanni Ribisi, Jamie Lidell and members of Wilco to perform Record Club tributes to Skip Spence’s Oar, The Velvet Underground & Nico and Songs Of Leonard Cohen.

For the INXS KICK record Beck has recruited St. Vincent, Liars and reunited Brazilian Tropicália group Os Mutantes to help out. Liars man Angus Andrews tackles the lead vocals on the first track from the project Guns in the Sky, but there’s no telling what will do with New Sensation, Need You Tonight or Never Tear Us Apart.

Michael Hutchence was a fan of Beck, and they played some of the same festivals together during 1997. A very rare numbered limited edition cd was released in 1998 by radio station 94.5 The Edge which included live tracks from both Beck and INXS at Edgefest 1997…the INXS live tracks are Elegantly Wasted, What You Need & Never Tear Us Apart…while Beck performs Where's It At. Beck's 1996 album Odelay was awarded Album of The Year by American RollingStone and by UK publications NME and Mojo. Odelay also received a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. His 2002 album Sea Change was also awarded album of the year by RollingStone magazine.
